At Brain Health Clinics we employ evidenced based principles to treat psychological problems. We are also one of the few psychology practices in Australia able to assess brain function prior to deciding on appropriate treatment.
Our methods are also effective for peak performance training.
Treatments:
These include neurofeedback therapy to address dysregulation of brain function. Research indicates that many of the common symptoms of psychological dysfunction arise from dysregulated brain systems, resulting in difficulties with attention and concentration, arousal, learning and memory, behavioural control, sleep, and anxiety and depression. The effectiveness of neurofeedback therapy derives from the fact of the brain's continuing neuroplasticity over the life span - see the book by Dr Norman Doidge and our Resources section .
We are able to assess whether there is brain dysregulation using quantitative electroencephalography (QEEG), a valid and highly reliable assessment of brain function. The QEEG measures the electrical activity of a person’s brain and then compares that unique pattern to a data base of “normal” patterns. Neurofeedback therapy, can then be used to "normalise" brain systems shown by QEEG to be dysregulated.
Many psychological difficulties can also arise from dysfunctional thoughts and associations of the mind, and revised memories of traumatic and stressful experiences. Here, cognitive and behavioural therapies can provide effective. We also provide psycho-education and counselling to help with the coping of psychological loss and difficulties.
In our experience, we have found that both neurofeedback and cognitive/behavioural therapies are required to effect successful treatment.
Assessments provided:
Treatment is usually preceded by an appropriate assessment of the symptom profile. In this regard, we are able to offer a range of different assessment needs:
- Psycho educational: to assess development on a range of measures relevant to educational needs
- Neuropsychological: to assess cognitive and affective capabilities on measures relating to sensory and motor function, attention, learning and memory, processing speed, language and executive function and visual-spatial function
- Medicolegal: to provide medicolegal evidence to the Courts relating to psychological and/or neuropsychological function
- Intelligence: to assess general intellectual abilities in the areas of verbal comprehension, perceptual reasoning, working memory and information processing speed
- QEEG: to assess the function and regulation of brain systems critical to arousal and attention, perception, learning and memory, executive function, behavioural control
